Town drew 1-1 today with Step 3 Biggleswade Town in The Emirates FA Cup first qualifying round.
This means that Town will travel over to Biggleswade this Tuesday night in a replay. But what a fantastic day for the club and everyone involved passed and present.
The visitors were a strong and technical outfit which what you would expect to see in Step 3, they boasted 2 fantastic wingers and overall were a really well drilled team.
But as said in the match preview we had nothing to lose whatsoever being 2 divisions below our opponents. Its actually ironic that should have beaten Kempston Rovers last season in our first ever game in the FA Cup then we would have hosted Biggleswade Town who won the division that Kempston were playing in.
Town were without Elliot Pride, Adam Hipperson, Ryan Crisp, Asa McGeachy, Jake Anema and Olly Ebbage so we were down to the bear bones but the performance did not for one minute look like we were at the bare bones. Kieran Nunn who i wanted to give a special mention to has travelled high and wide to be a sub goalkeeper and was given the nod in Prides absents, his performance was something that he should be proud of as he look as calm as anyone and was solid as a rock.
The game kicked off and the first 20 minutes or so were as expected for Town with the visitors having all of the ball. It would be fair to say that despite being 2 leagues higher they didn't really create anything of any substance to trouble Kieran Nunn in the Town goals.
Town then completely against the run of play opened the scoring, Brandon Pickess beat an offside trap which was very tight, i have not seen the footage yet so i cant say if it was offside or not anyway, Pickess ran down the right to square to Charlie Pennell and the 17 year old midfielder slotted it home to give Town an unexpected lead around the 27 minute mark.
Biggleswade then pushed towards the end of the half and their only half chance was smothered by Kieran Nunn in the Town goal. The visitors had some players that really were a different level, The right winger really was a pleasure to watch with his twisting and turning and at time gave George Barber a real test but Barbs to his credit stood well at times.
Then half time came and the only real chance of the game was the goal scored by Charlie Pennell.
At half time you kind of thought how long could Town hold out for, the effort in the first half put in by the players to nullify Biggleswade was outstanding.
The second half came and in all truth passed both teams by as Biggleswade again had more of the ball and made a couple of tactical switches but still we stood strong and you really felt that this could be our day as the minutes then counted down.
The main opportunity's came from Biggleswade but all truth the only one that was worth mentioning was a goalmouth scramble that was brilliantly blocked between Harrison Hide and Kieran Nunn.
Then the sucker blow cam for Town at the start of stoppage time, a long ball down the pitch eluded Matt Cook and George Barber brought down the Biggleswade winger for a penalty for the visitors. Barber was then given a second yellow card and the visitors scored the resulting penalty.
Town hung on and got themselves a replay on Tuesday night away at Biggleswade.
But todays performance is a platform to build on going into the season as a whole. The effort and desire showed was a pleasure to watch and being someone that has seen it all at this club for us to go toe to toe with a very well drilled Step 3 outfit has made me and everyone involved so proud.
Cornerstone Man Of The Match = Brandon Pickess
Brandon has been involved with Town since youth level and despite spending a couple of spells away with Town he has come back this season and has really been an important part. His energy (despite 8 pints of lager the night before) is incredible and today he ran himself into the ground which for his level of fitness is some running. He also assisted Charlie Pennells goal who by the way has made the jump up this season from Step 7 and has been brilliant to not only have on the pitch but off it as well.
Danny Crow and his coaching staff's tactics were spot on and again we are so proud of them and look forward to them progressing on this season with us.
